Why do you make music and what’s your inspiration? -You can make a living doing something you hate or you can die doing what you love. We all got choices. I just made the clear decision to do music and be good at it. I dig deep and I write my heart out. Making music can be hard work but if I burned myself out and died on stage one night, I’d still have a smile on my face. Art imitates life and life imitates art so to answer your second question, music inspires me to live and my life makes me want to write. What do you think about the culture of music right now? -That’s a pretty broad question. I will say that people are consuming music more than ever. We got rappers dropping several mixtapes in a year and new songs daily. I guess I’m just talking about hip-hop at this point, not all music but I think that is a generational thing. There’s this little thing called the internet and its made the world seem smaller. Social media and community sites have made a way for artists to become stars without leaving their living rooms. Whether that is good or bad, I just play ball. Where do you get the subjects of your music from? -I live. That’s pretty much it. I go out into the world and I live. I breathe, I ride the train, I get drunk, I have sex and I touch people. I make music that is specific enough to my life that my friends appreciate it but broad enough for the world to honor. I watch a lotta movies too. I pull concepts from film and kinda adapt them to my own world. I blog so I’ll find things on the net that make my mind flip. I’m a thinker too so I’ll think myself into circles and get so wrapped up in these ideas and concepts. Like DRUGS+CANDY.
Are you working on any upcoming projects? -DRUGS+CANDY is the project that I’ll be releasing soon. Its been my baby for the past few months and its really got a hold on me and my life right now. Its about the balance to imbalance of good to bad in our lives. I don’t mean “our” as in like my team, I mean the worldly “our”. You and me and the readers. There are drugs that heal and candy is not good for you. “Paper Girls” and “The Language” are two of the records we’ve released and they’ll both be featured on that project. Other than that, I have artists and creators around me that are actively working too so I want to invest time into fleshing out their ideas. Phil Reid directed the video for “The Language” and I want to do more of whatever he sees as his next step. I just trust him. Dev Allen is an artist I’m super excited about and we’ll start doing some work with him soon. Lotta dreams in the works over here. If you could fulfill one dream right now, what would it be? -I make wishes still and it would be unfair to me to tell you all of those because they may not come true, right? I just really want to drop an album that is respected. There’s not really an “if” to that, though. That’s the next thing after DRUGS + CANDY If you could describe yourself in one sentence what would it be? -I’m Prince Charming; the chinks in my armor are just princess cuts. If you weren’t pursuing rap what do you think you would be pursuing? -I used to write a little for magazines and if I wasn’t doing music I guess I would try to involve myself in that more. I also have this new-found affinity for fashion but I don’t know enough about the industry to really get involved in it. I suppose I would just like to write for an urban art and fashion magazine. Something that would have me traveling and seeing models on the regular…Kinda like the perks of a rap star. Out of all the local clothing companies in Atlanta who is your favorite and why? -I have relationships with a lot of these guys and they’re major. They are beyond local. I don’t know if I have a favorite either. Chilly-O, Street Local, Jamie Marx Co., Plush .357 and the list could go on. Those are the names that come to mind because these are guys I have ties with. Like Chill has taken time to drop a lot of wisdom on me. Street Local just keeps it ultra gully. With Jamie Marx and Plush for that matter, those guys are super creative like artistic types. It goes beyond the clothing with them. There is a method to the madness. Oh and there is this new line, Presidential Fits. They got some tough shit. Just a heads up. Fill in the blank: Music is my ! -B.I. end.
